Tonnes of radioactive water has leaked from tanks at the Fukushima Daiichi plant, operators say. Source: AAP
ABOUT 300 tonnes of radioactive water has leaked from storage tanks at a damaged nuclear power plant in Japan, the operator says.
Tokyo Electric Power Co said on Tuesday it had not identified the source of the leak at its Fukushima Daiichi plant, and conceded the toxic water had likely flowed into the soil.
The operator said on Monday puddles with extremely high radiation levels had been found near the storage tanks.
Tokyo Electric has been struggling to contain leaks at the plant as it continues to inject water into three reactors to keep them cool.
The reactors suffered meltdowns after the complex was struck by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami.
